Assembly processes with MPA Technology GmbH and Zimmer Group

In this particular task, MPA Technology GmbH’s objective was to enhance the efficiency and precision of label application and removal of the carrier film as part of an automation system for the assembly of electronic modules. Traditional methods such as pad printing or laser etching often encounter limitations when it comes to replacing classic labels, necessitating the exploration of alternative solutions.

The focus was twofold: first, to ensure the reliable removal of the carrier material during the labeling process, and second, to establish a systematic approach for disposing of the material post-labeling. This dual requirement demanded a solution that not only facilitated smooth label removal but also enabled controlled disposal of the carrier material without compromising the integrity of the label itself. Additionally, MPA Technology GmbH’s solution included a mechanism for seamlessly extracting the carrier film post-labeling, further streamlining the overall process.

Gripping and handling labels can be challenging due to their thin and flexible nature. When it comes to handling these, robots and end-effectors need to employ adaptive gripping mechanisms capable of securely holding labels without causing damage or deformation.

 

A cost-effective, reliable solution was needed that was characterized by a compact design with high performance.

To address these challenges, MPA Technology devised a smart solution incorporating specialized equipment and motion sequences. The precision positioning of the 6-axis robot from ABB robotics enabled a gentle yet effective detachment of the label from the carrier material with the help of our MGP800 gripper. The integration of our Zimmer Group 2-jaw parallel gripper of the MGP800 series provides a secure hold on the carrier material, preventing displacement or damage of the label during removal.  

The pneumatic gripper convinces with up to 10 million maintenance-free cycles, guaranteeing a continuous failure-free operation. A necessary feature when it comes to the reliable removal and disposal of carrier material during the labelling process and post-labeling. Backed up with gripper jaws crafted from ground surfaced and hardened steel, ensuring long-lasting performance, maximum precision and durability. 40% more power compared to the benchmark ensure superior performance in gripping tasks, while the integrated position sensing allows for a compact design that minimizes interfering contours – ideal for seamless integration into MPA Technology GmbH’s setup.

Thanks to the smart configuration of each step of the labeling and removal process, the automation systems expert was able to achieve enhanced efficiency and accuracy in their assembly system, ultimately contributing to improved productivity and product quality of the end customer.
